I hate Burda Magazine patterns. You'd have to really love a pattern to put up with tracing the entire bloody thing from the messy sheet they give you. I decided to finish tracing my jacket pattern (
this project, for those just tuning in) this afternoon, and after a few hours of figure skating and Mythbusters on in the background (and maybe a lot of procrastinating on facebook and twitter), got two more pieces traced.
That's right: Two.
*sigh*

4 pieces down, 7 to go. |
Anyone who manages to trace out a burda magazine pattern has the patience of a saint. I tried. SQUIRREL! I don't have the patience of a saint. I can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteThere's this other dress that I LOVE, have loved for a very long time. It has something like 17 pieces to trace. I don't think I love it as much anymore, not after I've experienced tracing first hand. :P
DeleteI think I have more patience for tracing than I would to try to do the download/print/tape together version of the patterns. That being said, I don't think I'd have the patience for all the pieces included in a jacket. I'm still looking for where the other skirt piece is printed for the Burda dress I started tracing...two days ago.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd maybe go less cross-eyed with the downloaded patterns, but I hear you there. Ick.
DeleteGood luck finding your skirt piece! Hopefully it turns up soon. :)
I quite like tracing burda when the mood takes me. The jacket in the picture certainly looks worth the effort.
ReplyDeleteYou can trace mine for me then. :D I need pieces 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 18, and 19! lol
DeleteI still love the jacket, so I guess it will be worth the effort. :)
I usually put on an audio book so I dont distracted by TV. Good luck on the rest!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a smarter plan. :D Thanks!
DeleteIt took me 3 or 4 hours. Then again, I wasn't as neat as you were, and I used carbon paper. ;) I can't wait to see how your jacket comes out!
ReplyDeleteI'm tracing onto clear vinyl (strong, easy to work with, and completely see-through) using sharpies. I like this, because I've had poor luck with carbon paper, and can never find large enough tracing paper. :) It works well, and I can tweak as I go, but it's a little time consuming, especially adding the seam allowance.
DeleteGet yourself a clover double wheel tracing wheel and you can trace the cutting line as the same time as the sewing line.
ReplyDeleteI can't find either wide paper for tracing onto nor any sort of tracing wheel like you mention in Whitehorse, and I don't order online. :( But that's alright. I'm using vinyl I found cheap at Walmart and permanent markers. It works really well, if a bit slow. Plus the vinyl is strong and durable. :)
DeleteSuch a cute jacket though, I'm sure it will be worth it! I trace all my patterns so it doesn't seem so bad to me. I'm sure you'll get faster at it. I don't add the seam allowances to the pattern, I add them as I cut out using a magnetic guide stuck to my scissors - that makes it faster too. Perhaps trace the lines you need with higher first? Anyway - good luck with the rest of it :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea about adding the seam allowance during tracing. I'm just afraid that I'd forget because I'm so used to patterns with seam allowance built in.
DeleteI like the idea of just tracing the seam allowance directly from the pattern paper. I'll try that out. (Not sure if that's what you're suggesting at the end of your comment, but that's what I got out of it. lol!)
