Have You Seen the New Burda Plus Patterns?!

I'm having a tough time containing my joy over Burda's new plus-sized patterns.  Unlike what they've been doing lately, these patterns actually appear to touch the body below the shoulder!  *gasp*  Look!  Fitted jackets!  Flattering dresses and tops!  A corset top!

I've tried to limit which ones I show here, but I love them all, seriously.  I don't know yet whether these are supposed to be in their magazine or just sold as patterns, but I need to find and buy them all.  Which of course makes me hope like crazy it's in the magazine so I can get them all at a decent price, but I think I'll buy them even if I have to pay full price for the patterns.

I mean, look at this jacket!  I love the leather and wool panels!  The hand stitched details along some of the seamlines are gorgeous too.

And I'm also in love with this jacket!  The leather trousers are probably not quite for me (I have epic thunder thighs), and yet I'm curious about them.  And now I've realized that I NEED a long white lacy skirt for the fall.

This jacket is similar to the ones above, but I love the lace detail around the neck (I think? Or maybe it's gathered light-weight fabric) and the hook and eye closure.  While I hate the fabric they chose for the corset, it's also pretty and has a lovely neckline.

I'm always always on the lookout for a pretty, basic, but flattering blouse.  Oh my love, I think I have found you.  How pretty is this?!  The Dirndl Blouse isn't showcased with the rest of the pattern in the spread, but it's here in the store, worn with the corset above (which shows off it's lovely neckline).

This dress is the last garment I'm showing (and really, I think that only leaves behind one top, which is basically this dress cut shorter), and I love it!  Well, I'm not a fan of how low cut it is (although I'm sure my boyfriend would love it), but is it ever gorgeous!  I love the fabric they chose for it too.  I even suspect that the mid-riff panel would help decrease the preggers look with all those gathers there.  Possibly.  Maybe?

What do you think of the patterns?  Will you be off to buy them all, or are you going to take a pass this time?

  1. Lovely designs. I'm a fan of the "not touching below the bust" look as it suits my odd shape best, but for a curvy lass like yourself this gear is fab!

    1. Do the plus patterns Burda has been putting out this summer (the really drapy ones) work better for you? I was annoyed by them because they are the worst possible shaping for me, but I'm curious if they'd actually work out for someone with a different shape.

    2. Well, my current burda ufo is 7672 in a red cotton lace, for example. Being in the other hemisphere, we won't see the warm season patterns here until a season later, and I'm not a big pattern buyer anyway, tend to drape my own. :) But the two patterns I have bought and made up from Burda, 7672 and 7396, suit me because they fit over my smallish bust then flare out to hide the parts of me that suit not the fitted look! I am small busted, broad shouldered, and I would be fairly straight up and down if I wasn't so lumpy and bumpy around the middle, all of which is much better flared over either by an empire line top or a skirt like the layered, fitted yoke one I am wearing today :)

    3. Cool! I think one of the things I like the best about sewing blogs is seeing/hearing people with completely different body types figure out what works best for them. It's interesting to compare with my own experiences, and humbling when I go and get cranky about a certain style (i.e. the drapy, no-touchy below the shoulders that Burda's been doing lately), only to learn that that style works best for other people. :)

I find that with a large bust and large hips, the drapy patterns tend to hide my narrow(er - I've been getting a little chunky there lately) waist and make me look even bigger than I am. Or pregnant. Neither of which is good.

Thanks for the insight! Like I said, it's fun to learn about what works for others. :D

  2. I find that often the plus section has better designs. Take that last dress for instance: I'd love to make it, but with a higher neckline because I don't have enough bomb for that shell, if you know what I mean. I'm at the upper end of the Burda pattern range, so maybe I could just suck it up and learn how to grade patterns down?

    1. I find it hit and miss (same with the regular selection of Burda patterns). Sometimes they have absolutely amazing designs, and the the rest of the magazine is just crap tossed together haphazardly. I've seen a few mags though, where the good designs are in the plus sizes, and then they seem to put a lot of thought into what would work best and come up with some fantastic details.

I didn't have much luck grading down, but I only tried the one time, and I didn't grade down enough. But I hear from others that it's not that hard to do once you learn the trick. I hope you work out how to fit these, because I think some of them would look amazing on you (like that leather and wool jacket)!

  3. Oh wow, I really like those patterns! I get the magazine at our local newsagency but its about 4 months later after its released and I don't think I can wait for those patterns! I really love the military inspired jacket, corset top (reminds me of a fitted waistcoat I used to wear over shirts to work but have never been abloe to find a pattern close to) and the blouse would be so nice in summer in a light cotton fabric!
I like the burda plus patterns, they are a bit hit and miss but on average they are so much better than the plus size patterns from the Big4. The ones I always like are generally the formal type dresses which are so impractical so its nice seeing wearable patterns for once!!

    1. They're all on sale in the Burda website store, if you really can't wait. I think they're $5.40 USD each. Not too bad, if you want to pick up one or two of your favourites until the September issue reaches you (Anon below says they're in that issue!!).

I LOVE these patterns! Oh Burda, why do you jerk my heart strings around so much?!

  4. Hi there,
All of the styles are included in the September 2012 Burda Style magazine. Sizes are from 44-52 except for the skirt (in third photo) which runs 44/46-52/54. Happy sewing.

  5. Nice styles, but Burda seems to be back to repeating itself. I've seen all of these styles over the last four years.

    1. Aw, that's sad. I mean, I'm happy about it, because I've never seen them before and probably never would've, but I'll bet it's annoying to those who have been following Burda for a long time. :\

  6. I liked this issue too! I'd let my subscription lapse but renewed it with this issue. So what are you going to make first from this issue?

    1. Actually, I think I have the fabric to make that skirt. It's simple and pretty, and I need easy projects to get my sewing mojo back. And you can download the "pattern" free at the Burda Store. It's basically a big rectangle with an elastic waistband. The gathered waist isn't the best on me, but it'll be fine with tops and toppers layered on top of it!

But after the skirt, I really REALLY want (all of them) that leather and wool jacket. Shame I don't have and can't get the wool here in Whitehorse, but I might keep an eye out for a mens wool coat at the thrift store... :D

What about you? Any catch your eye to make up?
