Look Mama! I'm Knitting!

Ugly ribbing and pretty cable knitting.
Still knitting, with a bit of crocheting on the side!  This hobby definitely takes up less room and makes less of a mess than sewing! (But I still miss sewing.)

I took a knitting workshop on Monday night, hosted by Yarn Bomb Yukon.  What was supposed to be a lesson on how to cable stitch basically became a beginners class on knitting.  I think there were 4 or 5 of us who were just starting out out of the 6 or 7 in the class?  Since I'd taught myself the basics the week before, I caught on pretty quickly and helped out a few others who were struggling.  I didn't realize how lucky I am to have learned when I was younger, since by the end of the class, I had learned how to do ribbing and cable knitting, while other's were stuggling to figure out knit and purl (or just knit, in some cases).  Spending over 20 years as a crocheter probably helped, since I understand yarn handling and tension, stuff like that.

Box stitch. Sort of. I butchered a few sections of it. This was good practice on keeping track of a pattern.

The class was a lot of fun, and I met some cool people!  Some of the women from Yarn Bomb Yukon are part of a group that gets together once a week at a local pub for a sit and stitch night, and I think I'll join them when they start up again this fall.

Anywho, boring post is boring.  I'll try to post about a finished project (or possibly a book review) next time.  Or maybe more spazzing about someone else's awesome projects!  Heh heh.

  1. Hey, I love all of your posts! And maybe I’m just totally knitting-ignorant (I am, actually), but these look really good to me! The cables are gorgeous.

I just found your blog a few months ago and read through the entire thing. You had me oohing and ahhing and laughing like crazy. The shadow box you did for your grandma is especially memorable. And I was amazed at the work and creativity you put into the wardrobe challenge. And that month you wore all the self-made clothes! Such an inspiration to me. Wow, this is getting mushy. I probably should have put it into an email instead of blurting it all out right here on your blog, but oh well, that’s me.

ANYWAY… I can’t imagine trying to sew in a small space. Right now I spread my sewing out over two rooms and drive my fiancé crazy in the process. But really, do we need the whole dining room table for meals? I think not.

I like looking at all your projects, not just the garment posts. As a girl who bounces back and forth between sewing and cross-stitch (my first true love) and drawing and art journaling, I understand crafty multi-tasking. I’m Bex, by the way. Hi.

    1. Hi there Bex! Thank you very much! This is an incredibly sweet comment, and totally brightened my dreary morning! Welcome to my little crafty nook. :D

My Grandma still has that shadow box, which is amazing because she doesn't keep 'stuff' like that around. It made me smile when I saw it perched on her mantle this spring.

Hahaha! I gave up my dining room table to sewing stuff and at at the coffee table when I lived in Kingston! You're fiance should be happy there's still room to eat at the table! lol

Thanks again for the lovely comment. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your own projects posted on your blog. It really is a fun way to share your hobbies with others, and I hope you enjoy it! :)

  3. Hey, didn't you agree not to post anything today?!? :P

That's cool that you've already found a crafting / drinking circle of friends up north. What a great way to move into a new community.

    1. IT WAS TOO LATE!! lol

Yeah, I was pretty tickled when they mentioned the sit and stitch. Drinking, knitting and chatter? Yes please! Let's smash that 'knitting is for grannys' stereotype while we're at it, too!

  4. As someone who has lived in Whitehorse, I can assure you there is never a problem finding someone to drink with!

Heather, are you knitting for yarn bombing the plane? I heard about it on CBC this week, sounds like a blast. I expect pictures when it happens. Please.

I am so glad you are settling in there and having fun, makes me miss it a little.

    1. I am helping with the DC-3 yarn bombing! It's nearly done, actually. Just re-enforcing the sections with rope and then that little task of getting it onto the plane, which should be...interesting. :D
