Mini Wardrobe 2012: Planning and Wishful Thinking

So there's a mini wardrobe contest about to start on Pattern Review, and I'm a sucker for wardrobe contests.  I really have no idea if I'll be able to do it, I'm not exactly Ms. Speedy lately when it comes to sewing (or even Madam Turtle, for that matter).  But I figured, what the hay, I'll try sewing along and see how far I can get.  After all, I already had a tentative plan for upcoming garments, so I might as well try as not.

Plus contests are good motivation.

No, the blouse design choice hasn't been cemented yet.  I'm starting to lean towards number 3 above though.  I still have to finish basic alterations on the blouse (fba, narrow shoulder adjustment, etc), so I still have a bit to decide.

I'm itching to cut into the mustard yellow knit, and I think a basic long sleeve top with some gathers at the neckline would be perfect!  And I'm determined to finally get the cardigan made in the fabric Stacie sent me eons ago.

Is that a pair of pants I see?  They may actually be a skirt, since I have an (ir)rational fear of sewing trousers.  It's a fear I'm going to have to face soon though, because there are next to no options for buying pants here in the North, and my two main pair of pants are going to kick the bucket any day now.

Like I said, I'm probably not going to get this whole thing done on time for the contest.  But it's pieces that I want to make up, so I might as well plug away at it, eh?

Speaking of plugging away at stuff, here's a sneak peak at one of my current projects:

  1. Ohhhh, I love hand knitting. Can't wait to see this one finished.
As for your mini wardrobe, it looks brilliant. The mustard fabric is interesting me, hopefully you will have it made it soon....

    1. Aha, oh I hope I can make up these garments. I'm seriously lacking in basics, and that yellow top would be really handy in my wardrobe!

  2. That knitting looks lovely and very advanced for someone who just started! Very nice.

    1. I'm not very good at moderation when it comes to new hobbies. I tend to just jump in. :)

  3. Wahh! I knew this contest was coming up, and here I am all dreadfully tempted to enter when I have a wedding dress to sew in... checking my calendar... 43 days. The dress is simple, it's fitted and muslined already, but who am I kidding? A wedding dress PLUS a mini-wardrobe? But ARGH I want to enter! OK, enough whining, sorry about all that.

I really like the storyboard and would be excited to see all these pieces come together. And I do love the v-neck of no. 3. As far as the pants go, I feel your pain. I have been wearing skirts and dresses almost exclusively this summer, trying to ride out the current skinny/low-rise mess in the stores. My 2 pair of pants are threadbare!

And whoa, look at that knitting! More, please :)

    1. Oh my goodness, I think your wedding dress trumps this contest! There will be another one next year (probably in spring), plus probably about 3000 contests in between then and now, so don't worry! I'm not officially joining unless I know I can finish in time. You could always try to sew along with the wardrobe, but again, wedding dress. :D (Can't wait to see posts on that!)

Apparently (according to the one jean shop in town, but it does cater to teens) the rise in jeans are slowly rising. Can't tell you about the skinny trend though. *preys that skinny jeans goes away*

  4. Looks like a great plan. I am with you - Madam Turtle - very slow. I am going to try this competition as well. I figure even if I don't get the whole wardrobe sewn (but still hoping) at least a couple of items will be a good start. I also have a fear of trouses - sewing - not wearing! I wear trouses most of the time so I have added a pair to my SWAP to make me try. Good luck Heather. Loving the look of your fabrics and will enjoy seeing what you sew.

    1. Thanks! If nothing else, the contest is a good motivation to get going on a fall/winter wardrobe (for me, at least). And maybe I'll finally FINALLY tackle my fear of trousers! Good luck to you, and I hope you manage to make up something you love (even *gasp* trousers)!

  5. I faced the same problem with pants. When my last pair of greys died I used them to draft a pattern and ended up with the perfect template. I have another pair under the needle now.

    1. I'm considering doing that with a pair of jeans I love. :)

  6. Your mini wardrobe looks like it's going to be great! I am so tempted to enter, but my slow buns seem to only complete around 2 items a month (though, I've been sewing all dresses lately).

Guess it's something to think about. ;) Good luck!

    1. You could always just sew along, and see how far you get. If you finish, then enter the contest! If you don't, well it motivated you to think about and sew for a coordinated wardrobe, and the sew-along thread at PR are probably going to continue on, regardless of time constraints!

    2. Good point! I was actually just thinking about wardrobe planning and how I never do it...I just go from pattern to pattern, never trying to create things that actually *work* together. I'm so torn now...I was going to finally make Lady Grey next! :P
