Thrifted Patterns: The fugly, and some pretties too!

Tanit-Isis showed off some of her thrifted pattern finds from this summer, both good and bad (although I don't think her bad were too terrible), when she asked:
Tell me about the stupidest pattern-impulse-purchase you’ve ever made.

Well now, instead of telling, I thought I'd show you. And sadly, this isn't even all of them, or even the worst, just the ones I had handy on Flickr from one single thrift shopping trip. I have no idea what I was thinking. Please don't judge me too harshly.

Okay, I kind of like the bodice of Simplicity 9224, and I think it could be pretty if made up well. Still, I have no idea why I bought these two.

In my defense, I've been seeing variations of the New Look 6484 in modern patterns (Vogue 8711 and New Look 6969 - the latter of which might actually be the same pattern, recycled), but that doesn't mean it'd actually work for me.

The sweatshirt will be made up for my Mom as she likes these types of tops. Well, she will if I lengthen it. Maybe.

Okay, generic robe pattern is generic. I have nothing to say about the Style pattern. I just don't know. I'll be over here, hanging my head.

Speaking of thrifted patterns, I found about a half dozen patterns from the 50's and 60's at a garage sale yesterday. I know that your confidence in my pattern choices are probably a little shaky right now, but there are some lovely patterns in there, especially the dresses. Sadly, they are too small for me (size 10-12, bust size 32). Dammit. SO, stop on by tomorrow, because I'm going to give these lovelies away!

  1. Haha! I actually kinda like McCall's 7356 and that last Style one... I have this thing for leg o' mutton sleeves even if it probably is a BAD idea...

Glad to inspire you. I'm pretty sure I have bought some dumber patterns than the ones I showed... I just didn't have photos handy :)

  2. Dear Heather
Thank you for stopping by my blog and your lovely comment! It is tough for me to buy patterns inexpensively from the country where I live (where US patterns are not sold so I have to resort to buying online and the shipping is ghastly!), I was wondering if you would be so kind to sell me the pattern of the last picture you posted in this blog post? or any other size 12s in your thrift find! I fell in love with it and it's my size! I couldn't find your email anywhere so I am leaving you this comment. Would appreciate if you can email me at sertyan@yahoo.com

    Thank you!

  3. I don`t actually think these patterns are too bad - I have made the simplicity hoodie/zip front top several times.

  4. I like 7352 as well! Maybe that's just the 80s child coming out in me. I'll check back tomorrow for your giveaway!

  5. Janine: I'm glad to hear the hoodie pattern is useful! I haven't actually looked up reviews on it yet. Honestly, it was only included in this post because it shared a picture with the New Look skirt. I'm looking forward to making it someday, especially since it's one of the few patterns that my Mom is willing to let me make for her. :)

Another Sewing Scientist: I suspect I thought it was pretty cute, if you focussed on the pattern and ignored the styling on the envelope. I just didn't think about the fact that it wouldn't work for me! lol
