Basting Woes - Part 1

HEY LOOK! I'm working on my coat! This is cause to celebrate, because I've been putting off basting all the bloody inside pieces to the outside pieces almost as much as I put off cutting out the pieces to begin with.

Or in the case of the interlining, the inside pieces to the other inside pieces.

I'd originally planned to baste the interlining to the shell fabric, but after consulting the RD-CGtS, I decided to attach it to the lining fabric. Plus the wool shell is awfully thick, and I don't think my machine would appreciate another layer there. I plan to treat the interlining and lining as one piece before sewing everything together.

Okay, I ought to get back to it. I have...*counts*...15 piece sets to baste together. Oh crud, now I wish I hadn't counted them. *despairs*

  1. Relax and enjoy the process, Heather! Last night I had to sew on 8 buttons to my shirt and then re-sew them all because they were unevenly spaced lol. I feel your pain.

    1. Oh boy, I hate when I mis-align buttons! So annoying to have to fix. I'm glad you were able to push though and get it (re-)done.

I just want this coat done, or at least to the point where I can actually start to piece this together and have something resembling a coat. All this finicky detail is less than inspiring. But it'll be there soon. I just need the patience to get through this part. Thank you for your kind inspiration! :D

  2. The coat will be awesome. When I am basting pieces, or hand sewing anything, I find a glass of wine and reruns are in order.

    1. I've had the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice on all afternoon (6 hours of Colin Firth = Mr. Darcy yes please!), and combined with my (spiked) hot chocolates, I've been able to get about 1/3 of it done (so far). :D

Of course, that doesn't stop me from procrastinating and stalking sewing blogs! Congrats on joining the red dress contest! Good luck. :)

  3. Oh, good job! I've never actually basted interlining to the lining---I've underlined shell fabric, and the interlining in my winter coat is free-floating, with butted seams to reduce bulk. Usually when underlining a coating I just hold the fabric in place and hope for the best---but if your lining fabric is slippery on both sides that might be trickier.

    You can do it!

    1. Uh...my lining is flannel-backed satin (emphasis flannel), and my interlining is brushed cotton...I probably could've gotten away with your method there. Hmm. Oh well, I'm finished the interlining now anyways, just need to sew in the sew-in interfacing. :P

Where were you with your *coughlazycough* time-saving methods when I was putting off this step all last week?!

    2. LMAO! Sorry... the only time I've ever hand-basted underlining was underlining a slippery, stretchy chiffon. For most other things I find machine-basting works. Or I just wing it. Someday it'll bite me in the ass, though.

    3. Hahaha!

I'm so excited that you're working on your coat... (I'm a drinker/period drama watcher/hand baster, myself...)

    2. I'm pretty sure I'm a slower turtle than you - evidence? the pajama project. Also thesis ;)

    3. Okay, I'm a coat-sewing turtle, because this is so ridiculously slow for me.
